Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), has said that the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is an important occasion to emphasise the importance of combating desertification and working to increase the green areas in the world. The occasion, which falls on 17th June each year, also underlines the need to continue to promote awareness on desertification and drought as the most serious environmental challenges worldwide, Al Suwaidi added. On this occasion, the Emirate of Sharjah is keen to raise awareness in keeping with its approach, which focusses on environmental awareness in general and the issue of desertification and the desert environment in particular. This keenness, EPAAchairperson continued, stems from the directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, which centres on providing all means, tools and mechanisms that contribute effectively to the prevention of environmental degradation and fighting desertification. She added that the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is an occasion to remember the importance of the environment and the need to protect it and to combat desertification, which carries many risks to human health, society and the environment, affecting one-sixth of the world's population, 70% of all drylands and 3.6 billion hectares in the world.Without a long-term solution, desertification and land degradation will not only affect food supplies but also increase migration and threaten stability of many countries and regions. Therefore, world leaders have spared no efforts to prevent the impact of land degradation as one of the goals of sustainable development goals, EPAA chairperson said.
